Organ donations

There was a booth with info material etc. on organ donations in town today when I went to the mall, so I picked up some material and ultimately ended up filling out a donor card. I don't know why I didn't do this earlier[1], but better late than never. :)

  1. Actually, one of the reasons I didn't was that I kinda assumed that non-straight people (men, anyway) were automatically disqualified, just like you're automatically disqualified from donating blood, bone marrow, and other such things. x.x

There was a bone marrow donor at uni. I was almost tempted to sign up. I mean, yeah, helping someone in desperate need can only be a good thing. But I didn't :/ I didn't want to risk an operation, or have the pain. Which was rather selfish of me.

Now I know I'm disqualified anyway, it's not as bad :3 I figured it would be the same, like giving blood.

Ah, I wouldn't call it selfish; bone marrow donation IS a rather involved process. It's not like donating blood (which can be done quickly and without any real risks), or organ donations (which only happen when there's no risk anymore, anyway, since you're dead).

Not sure if non-straight folks disqualify everywhere, but they do in the USA and Germany. Which really makes no sense to me — surely if somebody would otherwise DIE, what little extra risk there is would be justified? Not to mention that they're running lots of tests already, anyway...

I would hope they do tests anyway yes. Because not all straight people are squeaky clean, and not all non-straight people are disease invested :P

It appears, to be removing a source of bodily bits if you will, for no real reason.

The blood thing does annoy me. I would happily donate blood, but apparently having same-sex relations automatically disqualifies you from giving blood for all time, no matter how many partners you have or how careful you are. Otherwise, you can be as promiscuous as you like, and even sleeping with HIV-positive prostitutes in Africa only invalidates you for a year.

I do know why they do it, but I don't like it. (Well, even then I think it's illogical that a man who has ever sexual contact with another man once is banned full stop, whereas it's okay to give blood a year after having heterosexual relations with someone known to be HIV-positive..?)

*noddles* Yeah, I think it makes no sense, either. I wouldn't mind if they asked about high-risk activities in a sexuality-/gender-neutral way, but they don't. (Over here at least, the reason given for not doing that is that it would make the questionnaires "too complicated".)

I only became an organ donor because they offer that as an option when I renewed my driver's license and I couldn't resist the eager look the young clerk gave me when asking. Now there is a red, valentiney-looking heart up in the corner by my picture so that if I'm killed while driving they'll know they can have at me.

The sad joke is that if they notice this when extracting your clinging-to-life self from a wreck that they'll let you expire so they can harvest you ;o)

*noddles* In Germany at least, it's made sure that that doesn't happen.

yeah it's a mad world, they will want a gay kidney, but not gay blood. They don't want no flaming sparkly vampires rising from the grave.

Heh. Not that I'm even terribly flaming to begin with (or gay, for that matter)...

I find it curious that here in NZ a man can't give blood for ten years if they've had sex with another man, but a woman who's had sex with a man who's had gay sex has to wait only a year. Obviously no gay sex can take place within their respective time periods, otherwise the 'clock' would reset.

*nods* At least they do give you the ability to donate again eventually; over here, AFAIR, you're barred for life. (And you qualify even if you live in a stable monogamous relationship, while the straight guy who sleeps around and has unprotected sex several times each week, every week, can continue to donate without problems.)

Sure is odd. In Australia it is a deferral for a year with all 'unsafe' practices, but then again, it still includes male to male sex.

Weird system.

Yeah, it sure is. :/

Aren't you from NZ, though, rather than Australia? Or am I mixing things up again? o.o

Yeah, you'd think so, wouldn't you?

But yeah, at least the organ donation part is taken care of! :)
