Old but interesting

Old but interesting... with all the talk about illegal immigration into the USA, have you ever wondered what options there are for legal immigration and how long it will take you to follow those routes? Reason magazine has an overview here (from about two years ago); it's not entirely exhaustive, I think (there IS the green card lottery, for instance), but it shows the main options that exist. Here is another, more difficult to read flowchart (PDF) that gives you the nitty-gritty details on how to get to a green card — or have it denied.

On an entirely unrelated note, did you know that the USA now charge tourists from visa-waiver countries ten bucks for the priviledge of entering the country, plus an additional four bucks to process those ten bucks? Way to go, guys.

Wow. Basically it is 'We are charging people 10 bucks and that money goes to promote tourism'.

Hello! Charging people to enter is counterproductive to getting new visitors. :P

Yeah, you'd think that's just common sense, isn't it? It's funny how apparently, people (read: congresscritters) don't get it.

Not that a fee of ten or even fourteen bucks matters a lot (or at all, really) when you're already spending dozens of times that just for flights, and even more for hotels/accomodation, for food (especially restaurant visits), for admission fees etc., for souvenirs and shopping trips and so on, but nevertheless — I think it sends the wrong message, myself. "Welcome to the USA, tourist, prepare to be fingerprinted and questioned, and then prepare to pay for it, and prepare to pay for being able to pay for it on top of that..."

I just don't understand about the additional 4 dollars. Will they need another $4 to process the processing of that 4 dollars?

Perhaps. Of course, maybe they'll only need 1.60 USD, and then another 0.64 USD to process THAT, and so on, ad infinitum...

Maybe they should just charge people 16.67 USD and be done with it. :P

I didn't realize the steps involved to gain what being born here I take for granted. I assume it's no easier anywhere else, though.

No, certainly not... still, it's interesting what kinds of hoops people are made to jump through.

Wow, I never thought it was that hard. Dang it, there goes my dream of ever permanently living in the US.

Aww, don't give up entirely, though. It's hard, but it's not impossible.
