The size of Africa

This is a rather interesting illustration. I'm not sure I really like the term "immappancy", but it neatly illustrates a problem with maps[1], and the misunderstandings that result from them.

  1. There's equal-area projections, of course, but those tend to distort shapes and thus have their own problems.

Aye.

When I was young, I actually had a globe; I'm not sure I ever used it much, but it did teach me a thing or two. :)

I knew Africa was big. It is after all, the second largest continent. But seeing how many large countries can actually fit within it's land area is very illuminating.

I'm also appalled by the ignorance of American school children :/ We really need to do better in our pre-college education.

*noddles* Yeah, you should — not that I'm singling out the USA there, though, the same is true for pretty much every country. It's a constant struggle.

And it IS illuminating, isn't it?

Ok, just being silly, but yeah, it really does illustrate the sheer size of the continent. Still, I like how they put the U.K. on top of Madagascar ;)

Mmm, yeah, so do I. When you hear "Madagascar", you don't think "right, that's about the size of Great Britain", do you?
