Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery

Wow, it appears that LJ has decided to implement profile games; presumably, things like Farmville etc. on Facebook (there's one called Farm Frenzy, even, which seems like a pretty obvious clone, although not having looked into either, I can't say for sure). Imitation really is the sincerest form of flattery, I guess.

I really can't say I care much myself, and I'm not sure I see it as a step in what *I* personally consider the right direction, either, but it'll be interesting to see how this plays out nonetheless.

EDIT: There's an entry in lj_releases now, too, and a news announcement.

True, it doesn't really — but as long as it doesn't interfere, I think it should not be such a huge problem.

And I'm not sure they're trying to become Facebook, but I sure hope not; I don't think it'd make sense anyway, since people who want Facebook will always be able to go for the original — what could an LJ-turned-Facebook-clone offer to them? LJ really needs to focus on being Livejournal and having its own Unique Selling Proposition.

Ah well. There's still DW in case LJ really goes down the shitter. :)

It could be less of a "get people from Facebook" and more of a "Stop losing people to Facebook"... or, of course, an alternate revenue stream. Haven't played any of the games, but are there some sort of purchases or ads?

Mmm, I don't know, but I wouldn't be surprised; surely they'll try to monetize this SOMEHOW.

And to think, there was once a time when "monetize" was just a made-up word.

Yeah... at least I didn't say "incentivize", though. (I really dislike that word; there appears to be absolutely no reason to not use "encourage" instead.)

I wonder if Despair has one about language abuse by middle/upper management...

If not, you could design one and try to sell it to them ;)

Hmm, I'd do something more subtle, myself. Perhaps a picture of old, leatherbound, quite possibly cobweb-covered tomes that say "Oxford English" or something along those lines, but I'm not sure about the text yet. Something that boils down to "who cares if it's in the dictionary", of course, but phrased better. The heading should probably say "Dictionaries" or "Language" or so, and the text below it should have something that contains a made-up word like "incentivize", but I can't think of anything right away now.

It appears you are less than thrilled about this change (understandably so, I might add).

I suppose a certain amount of "keeping up with the Jones'" is to be expected... And as long as it doesn't intrude on the functionality we've all come to use, I don't see that it should be a problem ... "if" ...

Yeah, if it doesn't interfere with the rest of the site, it should be mostly harmless.

I just hope they're not going to forget that the reason LJ is successful at all is that it's different from the other sites — it's not Facebook (and offers things Facebook doesn't), it's not Blogger (and offers things that Blogger doesn't), and so on. LJ would be well-advised to keep it this way, since once it stops being special, the other sites will eat it for breakfast.
