Just as a heads-up (since I haven't said it in a while and since LJ seems to have suffered quite a bit from various DDoS attack recently[1])...

If you have a Dreamwidth account already, let me know what it is! Conversely, if you DON'T have a Dreamwidth account yet, let me know if you want an invite code; I have a couple I can hand out.

  1. For more information, see this post in news, as well as these two posts by oceanplexian in lj_maintenance. And of course, as usual, keep an eye on status (also available as an off-site page) for information on what's going on.

Yeah, that seems like a bit of an oversight. :)

Trying to access LJ this morning was so annoying. My cross-post from DW worked fine, but I couldn't get on. I've got extra invites as well if you run low.

OK, thanks! :) I should be good (I've run this kind of post before, and there's not really been a lot of interest, certainly not so much as to cause me to run low), but I'll direct people to you if necessary. :)

It's a Livejournal cone, sort of. The site's running the LJ codebase, but with its own improvements and changes (notably, and I think this is wonderful, separating "subscribe to" from "give access to"); it's also committed more strongly than LJ to free speech and not being commercial. I think it was initially founded a couple of years ago after the uproar over the introduction of advertising on LJ.

Since it's been suspected repeatedly that LJ may go belly-up at some point (notably in the SixApart era; SUP seems to be doing a better job with managing LJ nowadays), there was also a need for alternate "exodus" sites to move to so people wouldn't end up being scattered all over the place, with friendships and all that fracturing. GreatestJournal was "the one" at first, but they folded themselves at some point (and were never happy with a large increase in the number of users looming over their heads, anyway); InsaneJournal was also considered for a while, I think, but Dreamwidth is the current choice, and I think it's the best one, too: to be quite frank, none of the other sites seem like they really have the right kind of team behind them.

That's about it, in a nutshell. :)

I see, it sorta makes sense to get an account then, at least as a backup. :)

Moved over when the last round of 'LJ is horrible, I'm leaving' happened. Got upset no one else moved over.

*nods* altivo did, but he's the only one I know of. I didn't know you'd gone there, though — did you mention this in your LJ?

(Also, I totally forgot to say that one of the reasons I didn't move myself yet is that I've got a permanent account here, so I've got a bit more of a stake in LJ. I'm not actually terribly happy with that — I'd prefer a paid account, as that'd mean LJ'd have to care about making me happy so I won't stop sending them money —, but that said, I do have perks here I don't get on Dreamwidth, so I'm reluctant to move until it's really necessary.

I switched over on 04-21-2010: http://nikonraccoon.livejournal.com/268064.html

I've been doing the crossposting because I know more folks here. Most of my DW reading page are RSS feeds.

I really need to write more, but I don't want to cause drama.

I'm tempted to move over there permanently now. I find LJ is a waste of time. I'm not saying DW will be any different in the long term, but it might be interesting to start over from scratch and see how it goes.

*noddles* If you do, be sure to let me know; I don't currently read my DW friends page (although I'm starting to think I should).

*hugs*

I certainly will. In the meantime, I might just cross-post for a while. The single entry I have over there is feeling lonely!
