Does anyone have any idea what exactly userapi.com does, or why LJ just started trying to load scripts from that site? And does anyone have any idea why I should allow that to happen?

Huh. That's a really excellent question, actually!

It goes to some company/site called VK (vk.com), which appears to be relatively benign, I guess, but I can't find much information on what they do. They seem to be some sort of social networking thing, based on the API calls available in their documentation (friends, audio/video stuff, etc), but if it is, it's very closed.

Whatever the case, it's something based on Russian, surprise surprise, so asking this in an official LJ forum/post/whatever would probably be a good idea.

Did some more digging, apparently it is a real social networking service of some sort, but it's invite-only. I was able to figure out how to access profiles and what-not, and it pretty much looks like a Facebook clone: http://vk.com/id5040413 (a randomly-found profile)

This does beg the question of what exactly this is. My initial guess is that it's related to the Russian version of the Share button, but it's possible they're aiming for some sort of integration with that site, since LJ is popular is Russia and, apparently, so is VK.

Mmm, yeah, that looks like a Facebook clone indeed. Actually, I'm wondering now if "vk" is an abbreviation for "vkontakte.ru" — I'm not familiar with that site myself, but it seems hugely popular among Russian furries, for instance. (And I just checked, and Wikipedia confirms that they're the same.)

So it's a known name, at least, and I can understand why LJ might want to integrate more with them, but I sure as heck still am not gonna allow a random third party to run scripts on every single LJ page, including those that contain things like non-public posts (mine or others') etc.

Given that I can't keep others from doing the same, I wonder if I shouldn't finally switch to DW after all at some point.

Yanno, loading your journal showed FireFox retrieving data of some sort from facebook.com

Maybe you're getting facially recognised ;)

Unlikely; what you're seeing is probably just Facebook Connect in action.
