Skype ads

From the "what-the-buck-are-they-thinking" department...

I knew that being purchased by Microsoft would mean that Skype'd go from bad to worse, but I really didn't expect what they apparently come up with now: advertising in your calls. porsupah has the scoop:

Have you ever used Skype to make free calls to someone else, and thought, "What I could really use now are some opportunities for marketers to reach me"? Be happy, therefore, as Microsoft has made your dreams come true! "Today we are announcing the launch of Conversation Ads in Skype. These new display ad units will appear within the calling window of users who do not have Skype Credit or subscriptions when they're making 1:1 Skype-to-Skype audio calls using Skype for Windows." Bonus points to the PR flack writing that piece, for including the wishful sentiment that "while on a 1:1 audio call, users will see content that could spark additional topics of conversation" - well, I suppose that could be true, but those additional topics might involve an elevated incidence of expletives. =:)

Really now. "Content that could spark additional topics of conversation"? That's adding insult to injury.

Conversations along the lines of. "Wow an advert in a call, lets find something better than skype!"

Of course you could get around it by buying £1 of skype credit and never using it... ^^

Hehe, yeah, I imagine that's how those conversations would go. ^^

And maybe that's just the plan:

  1. Insert ads into Skype calls
  2. Make people buy Skype credit so they'll go away
  3. PROFIT!!!

You never know. :)

I'm not going to :P I don't look at the skype window while I'm calling people. We're usually playing online games or somesuch.

Now, if they were listening to your conversation and inserting relevant adverts, then it's time to worry :3

Oooh, or how about (spoken) text replacement? "BRB, just need to grab a can of coke PEPSI!." — "What? Dude, I thought you hated that stuff. Also, what happened to your voice?"

For extra hilarity, allow businesses to do this, too. "See you at McDonald's BURGER KING! tomorrow?" — "Sure, I'll be there. And I'm telling you, something's wrong with your voice, better go see a doctor some time."

I actually pay for Skype for my backup/secondary/redirectory phone service and it's just handy for a number of reasons. If they start showing ads on my paid premium account, it may be time to check out alternatives.

If you're paying them, it sounds like you'll be spared, for now.

Reminds me of Monty Python's dinner conversation skit ...

"Good evening! Uhh, would you care for something to... talk about?"

"Oh, waiter! This conversation isn't very good."

*chuckles* I don't think I've seen that one, but it sounds rather appropriate.

As I use the Linux version of Skype, I assume that I won't see the ads, as the bumf seems to refer only to the Windows version.
