LJ is doing a new promotion:

Is your Friends page feeling a little empty? Do you have friends who haven't posted in a while you'd like to hear from again? Invite them back, and you can both get some free Paid account time as a bonus!

Our new Remember LiveJournal promotion lets active members like you send their long lost LiveJournal friends an invitation to return. If they accept, both you and your friend will receive a free month of Paid account time! You can earn 1 month of free Paid account time for up to 5 people who Remember LiveJournal, for a total of 5 months of free Paid account time. After that, you can still keep inviting friends, and they'll still get their free month of Paid account time. A special gift will be given to the person who has the most friends Remember LiveJournal, we'll be giving them a permanent paid account!

To start inviting old friends go to http://www.livejournal.com/remember/ while logged in to your LiveJournal account, and enter your friend's username. We'll send them an email with a confirmation code (or you can copy/paste the link and send it to them directly). Once they accept, they just need to post an entry for you both to receive your free month of Paid account time!

Head on over to http://www.livejournal.com/remember/ to help your friends Remember LiveJournal!

Here's a post in news as well, with a different text than what was sent out by email.

(On a side note, I'm not sure what a "permanent paid account" is, but I reckon it's just a regular plain old permanent account.)

It's an interesting idea. ^_^ I do wish they'd included mention of the "year without logins" though - although I suppose it can be difficult to tell, as some folks do indeed appear to lurk quietly, simply not posting anything. =:/

The problem, of course, with any kind of referral scheme is how to make using it not seem like just an incentive grab. There are several folk I'd love to see posting actively again (especially jessie_pup, though it'd be fun to see tania too), but then casually slipping in that if they use this code we both get some free paid time..

Still, a decent idea. Wonder why Cyrillic users are excluded, though?

I wonder if they'll ever just outright sell permanent accounts? I suppose it's a bit risky for a company to do so, even if they're the cost of a few years' normal paid time - once they've got that, there's maybe no more income from that user again, short of possibly icon extension packs or custom head icons.

Aye, I agree. I've also got folks I'd like to see back on LJ, though as I mentioned in news, most of those I know who left LJ did so because they moved on in life — new jobs, new family situations, new opportunities, less time for blogging. It's not gonna be the highest priority in life for most folks (and rightly so), and if more important things take up all your time, it'll have to be put on the back burner.

Still, a decent idea. Wonder why Cyrillic users are excluded, though?

Good question. I imagine this is because LJ is popular among Cyrillic users in the first place, so they don't need to do promotions there (or not this one, anyway), and they want to avoid giving out a lot of paid time to people there who might otherwise well pay for it. But that's just me guessing.

I wonder if they'll ever just outright sell permanent accounts? I suppose it's a bit risky for a company to do so, even if they're the cost of a few years' normal paid time - once they've got that, there's maybe no more income from that user again, short of possibly icon extension packs or custom head icons.

They've done that, actually, twice. The first time was in 2005; the second, in 2007. According to that post, they went for 150 USD both times, but my personal recollection is that they were more expensive the second time around (150 vs. 100 USD or 200 vs. 150 USD, I'm not sure anymore). (This is how I got mine as well, BTW. :) I wish I had the bragging rights to be able to say I actually earned it by doing something major for the site, but I can't; it was my friend George that convinced them.)

Given a regular paid account can be had for 20 USD/year, it's not a bad move for them. At the time they probably weren't sure they'd still be around in a few years, and needed to raise cash. Ironically it may well have been that cash that allowed them to survive, but in the end that just means that it was a win-win scenario: LJ stayed in business, and because LJ stayed in business, permanent account buyers eventually got their money's worth. And everyone, permanent account user or not, got to benefit from LJ staying online, of course.

That said, I wouldn't expect them to do this again, unless and until they're concerned about eventual bankruptcy, and I sure hope that's not gonna be an issue again.

Ah, people still have those? I've not seen any of those Twitter dump posts in quite a while, thinking about it.

I thought about gaming this... I'm in touch with a fair number of people who have LJ accounts and I could probably hit the maximum 5 months fairly easily. However it occurs to me I don't actually know WHY I WOULD WANT a paid LJ account anymore.

Good question — unless you like posting polls, want more userpics etc., there's probably no compelling reason to get one.

Well, you could get one to help the site out a bit and help it cover its running costs, but that wouldn't work if you're getting paid time for free. :)

Being able to edit comments used to be paid perk as well.

Paid account options include: "text messaging", more than 6 icons (max 30), doubling gallery space to 2 Gig, increasing number of "subscriptions" (?), allowing up to 20 "voice posts" and a bunch of stuff listed here (which probably is a bit out of date), like not seeing adverts on LJ.

More perks you can pay for: an exclusive "theme" for you journal, promote your journal/community on the homepage, "gift" images that would adorn the receiver's profile page, custom userhead and changing your username.

It did indeed. And it's not anymore? Interesting.

increasing number of "subscriptions" (?)

Ah, subscribing to something means you want to receive notifications (by email and otherwise) that it changed in some specified way. For example, you can subscribe to posts (that aren't yours) to receive notifications of new comments posted to them, and so on. You can check what you've currently got here.

Because I used to get way too many emails (easily 50 a day) from all the Listserves I'm on, my settings for LJ are to notify me of PM's only. ^_^ A subscription is not something I'd pay for.

Well, they can be useful if you want to – say – get notifications when a post in a community receives comments. Say, someone asks a question that's of interest to you as well; subscribe to that post and you'll get emails whenever someone posts a comment.

It used to be more useful when LJ had (many) active communities, but it's still a good feature to have.

Wait, I've thought of one. Their analytics tool isn't free. If I want to track visitors more than "uh I'm pretty sure some people read my stuff?" I would need that.
