'cause I'm from Hell, and DOOM I'm bringing

It's that time of the year again — it's DOOMsday, the 18th anniversary of DOOM's original release on December 10th 1993.

Doomworld, as usual, is hosting the annual Cacowards, too; be sure to check them out and play this year's winners if you haven't done so already.

And while you're at it, celebrate DOOM's birthday by playing through the original levels! If you don't have it, grab a copy of the shareware episode, download a source port so it'll run on your PC (I'd recommend Chocolate Doom if you want something as close to Vanilla, PrBoom-plus if you want a Boom-based port, or GZDoom otherwise; alternatively, you can run the original in DOSBox, too).

Lock and load, marine! >:) Don't leave yet — there's a demon around that corner!

Heh, Wolfie is fine, too — it's sort of DOOM's older brother, after all, and they're both beyond the age of sibling rivalry now. ;)

I certainly like Wolfie a lot, too, but in practice, I find the controls awkward and the visuals and design limited. Good modders can get around that, and there's some very interesting playthrough videos on Youtube — check out e.g. Balames87's stuff. He's a skilled player, and he always has very interesting and entertaining commentary.

He does DOOM videos, too, BTW; these are also interesting, although otherwise, I prefer DOOM demos.
