I've mentioned swimming across Jeogeot Bay before, on day 39, but I don't think I ever showed what it actually looks like. So if you've been wondering, the above is it.
SL does not have any built-in swimming, so I'm still using sLwim. It features different swim styles; I'm displaying the standard front crawl here (which automatically changes to a breaststroke when you're underwater). When it's working, it looks and feels quite real, too.
Alas, it isn't always working perfectly. In fact, even though scripts should be running server-side, it seems to be adversely affected by low framerates on your part; the lower my framerate got, the more prone I was to sinking (and bobbing up again), having difficulties at sim crossings, and more. Part of this is also due to the interface itself: the key for swimming up (when you're below the surface) is the same as for jumping, and when you reach the surface, you WILL jump and start flying — and when you stop flying, you drop into the water with a big splash and sink again. You can probably see where this is going: it can be quite difficult to actually return to the surface and swim there, at least when your framerate is low.
And my framerate tends to be low, usually; I value visual quality, and I like turning on light/shadow calculations for screenshots, which further slow things down (to a point where SL becomes difficult to use, which is why I don't USUALLY have it on).
But outside of that, swimming in SL is fun; I just don't know why it's not built-in.
The island in the background is the volcano island seen on day 31 again, of course. And as you can see here, there's actually a lot more to it than the volcano proper; much of it is still hidden, but there's a large atoll behind it, with palm trees and tiki huts. Apparently, it's a popular gathering spot, too: every time I pass it, there's a dozen people or so there, give or take a couple.
Since I didn't want to intrude, I continued past it again; and then I also went past Michael Linden's home (see day 39 again), briefly took a detour to the (north)west, and then went northeast again once I realized I was about to hit the land to the west of Jeogeot Bay. Ultimately, I came across a small island; and moth_wingthane also happened to visit the same sim to check out some planes, so we met up there and spent the rest of the evening (consider this a bonus picture):

And that was it, really: a few other friends briefly joined us, but it was already late, and we were tired, so we didn't do much other than lounge about on the beach towels.
