365 days of SL, day 103:

(Click for larger — 1920x1033 PNG, 1506 KiB)

I more or less randomly found myself in Rubberpup's Realm again yesterday, or (more precisely) in the estate that it's part of. I didn't spend much time (something I'll rectify soon), but I got a screenshot when I came across one of the lowest examples of skybox building I've ever seen.

That's the above, of course; a dojo of sorts situated on a floating hunk of rock, suspended over the lake in the Randgrand Central sim, getting in your screenshots and generally distracting you. The surface is about 82 meters above sea level; the lowest parts of the rock supporting it are at 60 meters.

It doesn't look bad at all on its own, but I'd have put it much higher myself (unless there is a very good reason why it has to be down there), and in fact I think there should be a lower limit on skybox building that's at least a kilometer or two. (Preferably more — maximum draw distances are only going to increase as time goes by.)

Location: Rubberpups Realm (144, 171, 52) (Stonetalon Retreat). Note that this is my own location, not the floating dojo's.

Huh! That is rather a curious decision. I could even understand maybe 250m or so, but that's at a height that's all but guaranteed to be seen from ground level.

Perhaps the owner was aiming for deliberate visibility, à la Laputa?

Someday, I'll actually remember to get in-world before I'm dead tired. ^_^; It just seldom seems to occur to me when I get back into the warren. Maybe I'll try remembering while I'm still on campus, perhaps out in the common area outside the shared office space. (All open-plan, annoyingly, with the inevitable result that a few people insist on holding prolonged conversations in situ rather than snagging one of the breakout rooms, and consequently, the headphones flourish. *sigh*)

That's what I'm thinking, but I'm really not sure why you'd want that — at least while still keeping it as a skybox. It easily could've been made into an island in the lake or so instead.

Heh, yeah, do get on when you get a chance to! You might even see me online depending on our timezone offsets these days, and on when you can leave the salt mines. :)
