365 days of SL, day 134:

In the absence of specific other plans, I took a look at my older landmarks last night to see if there was anything in there that caught my eye — and indeed, several sounded interesting; the one that most stood out to me simply said "12-Jan-2011 - Abandoned Land - PLANE". We decided to go there (it turned out to be located in the northwestern part of Satori), but while it was empty, it wasn't abandoned anymore, and there were no planes there, either.

Well, there was one after we arrived, but you know what I mean. :P

Abandoned land (see the SL knowledge base for more) is surprisingly common in SL, too. The Second Life Grid Survey estimates that 8.8% to 9.8% of the Mainland (by area) is abandoned, apparently a record high; the June 2012 Mainland census has more information:

Known Abandoned land is now 38,942,368Sqm (19.7%) up by 22.9% since March 2012 ,110.7 Regions worth . Blank and other unknown descriptions comes to 4,866,256Sqm (2.4%) up 0.9%

So abandoned land is somewhere between 38,942,368Sqm and 43,808,624Sqm or 8.8% to 9.9% of all Mainland - an equivalent of 594 to 668 full regions.

Quite a bit, when you think about it.
